1.1       Appendix A – Installation and Technical Requirements

In this manual, the name of your server must be typed in the place of \\server where this appears.

BiblioTECH may come pre-installed. If it isn’t then here is what to do:

Technical Requirements: Background

BiblioTECH (with the exception of the Standalone Stocktaking Modules that are Windows 3.1 compatible by design allowing them to run on a minimalist portable computer) is 100% 32 bit code. It is written mostly with Delphi 3 Client Server but also includes sections written in Assembly Language (the backup routines, the Search routines etc). As such, BiblioTECH runs on Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.

BiblioTECH runs in one of three different modes depending on which module is being used:

Standalone Mode. Standard Search: this module runs as a standalone program not dependent on the network. If the network is operational it checks periodically (about every 10 minutes) to see whether an updated Search Table is available. If it is, a yellow "Update Available" button flashes. If the network is unavailable then it runs using the last downloaded copy of the Search Tables.

Web (Internet) Mode. In conjunction with Microsoft Internet Information Server version 3 (MS IIS V3) - a web server supplied free with Microsoft NT version 4, or Microsoft Personal Web server (a free Windows 95 product), BiblioTECH , provides a Web publishing service either on the WWW or on your local intranet. This requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.01 (another free product) or later or 100% compatible.

Networked Mode. All modules other than Search require a full time reliable connection to the server’s data tables. Even on the server, this connection is via UNC (universal naming convention). If you map a drive and run one of the modules via a direct drive mapping as soon as it initialises the module will switch to UNC.

Technical Requirements

Server: Installation requires Administrator privileges – you need to log onto the server as an administrator to install BiblioTECH on the server.

Network Mode: work-stations must be able to access the server using UNC network connections

Web Mode: MS IIS V3 must be installed on a NT server (MS IIS V3 requires NT 4 Service Pack 3). The WWW server SCRIPTS alias must point to the \\server\bt$\InetPub\Scripts folder or the files in this folder must be copied to the existing SCRIPTS folder. To enable BiblioTECH graphics on the browsers, the SCRIPTS folder must have READ access enabled (in addition to EXECUTE access).

WorkStations: the UserID used during installation must have read/write access to the \\server\bt$ structures and must have local administrator rights to the workstation. The UserID used when running BiblioTECH must be able to read/create/write to directories under \\server\bt$ and on the local C:\ drive and be able to read/update and create entries in the system Registry.

Un-Installing requires permission to delete entries in the system registry as well.

1.1.1      Server Installation

BiblioTECH needs Windows 95 or Windows NT 4 (or later) for the Server. The Server is the computer used to store the BiblioTECH data tables and executables. BiblioTECH will work on a plain (vanilla) Windows 95 or NT 4 install. We recommend you use NTFS rather than FAT formatted drives.

Insert the BiblioTECH CD-ROM: the setup program should start automatically. If it does not then use Explorer to run setup.exe in the root directory of the CD-ROM. For example, if your CD-ROM is drive d:\ then run d:\setup.exe

Select the Server Install/Upgrade button

You will need to enter your School Name and Registration Key.

The Server Install routines will ask for a local drive to install to: navigate to your preferred location.

The Install routines will create a directory at the root of this drive called \Library and share it with the sharename bt$. For example, if you specify drive f:\ on a server named SERVER_1, BiblioTECH will create a directory: f:\Library and a share of \\SERVER_1\bt$. All access to this directory – even during installation, is via UNC. This sharename is "invisible" that is, it does not appear in network neighbourhood. You are STRONGLY ADVISED not to disclose its existence for security reasons.

If the Web Server Code does not self install then consider the following:-

1.1.2      Manual Web Code Install

To manually install the BiblioTECH Web Components:

1. Locate the Web Server Folders - what you need is the location of the Web servers Scripts and WWWRoot folders.

            - refer to MS documentation

However, the following brief descriptions should suffice:

-         Method 1 - for MSIIS V3: use the Internet Service Manager

o       For example, using MSIIS V3: use: ÿ Start à Programs à Microsoft Internet Server (Common) à Internet Service Manager. Select the WWW service, choose Properties à Service Properties select the Directories tab. The Scripts alias should tell you where the Scripts directory is. The default is C:\InetPub\scripts

o       then locate the WWW service/properties scripts folder, The default is C:\InetPub\WWWRoot

-         Method 2 - for MSIIS V4: use the Internet Service Manager

o       Start the Internet Service Manager

o       Select the Web Server (usually the default one)

o       In the right pane will be the paths to the two folders:

-         Method 3 - for MSIIS: use the Registry

o        ÿ Start à Run: type regedit and press [Enter] the folders are at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\W3SVC\Parameters\Virtual Roots

o       key name is '/SCRIPTS' value usually is C:\InetPub\scripts,,204

o       key name is '/' value usually is C:\InetPub\wwwroot,,201

2. Stop the Web Server (if it is running)

o       NT:

- ÿ Start à Settingsà Control Panelà Services

-         Select World Wide Web Publishing Service: Stop

o       Win95/98

-         - use the Personal Web Server Tray Icon or Control Panel Applet

-         if the WWW service won't stop (ie it has crashed) you need to re-boot

-         if the WWW won't work at all then

o       check TCP-IP is installed with a static TCP-IP address bound to the network card

o       re-install the Web Server preferably from original MS disks

                        - (a). remove the Web Server

                        - (b). remove the WWW default user in USER MANAGER: IUSER_MachineName

                        - (c). re-boot

                        - (d). add the Web Server back in

3. Copy Files:

                        - from \Library\InetPub\Scripts\SearchWWW.dll to Scripts folder from (1) above

                        - from \Library\InetPub\BT\*.* to WWWRoot\BT\*.* (you need to create the \BT folder)

4. Start the WWW Service:

o       NT:

- ÿ Start à Settingsà Control Panelà Services

-         Select World Wide Web Publishing Service: Start

o       Win95/98

            - use the Personal Web Server Tray Icon or Control Panel Applet

1.1.3      WorkStation Installation

You need to run the workstation install routines on each workstation you want to run BiblioTECH on.

On the Server: use the CD-ROM’s setup program WorkStation Install button and install one (or all) of the following on the server: Circulation, Materials, Patrons, Reports or Utilities.

On the server: select ÿ Start à Programs à BiblioTECH à Show Tools. The Password is initially set to INDIG0 – note the last character is a digit: 0 (zero) not the letter "O"

Select Make WorkStation Install Disk. This will create a one floppy disk installation disk for use on any workstation BiblioTECH is to be used. Any workstation only using Web Browser access to BiblioTECH does not need any special installation

If you use profile restrictions, the files which need to be able to execute on the work-stations are:

Search: LAUNCHER.EXE, WSSETUP.EXE, BTSEARCH.EXE

Circulation: LAUNCHER.EXE, WSSETUP.EXE, CIRC32.EXE

Materials: LAUNCHER.EXE, WSSETUP.EXE, BOOKS32.EXE

Patrons: LAUNCHER.EXE, WSSETUP.EXE, PATR32.EXE

Utilities: LAUNCHER.EXE, WSSETUP.EXE, UTIL32.EXE

Reports: LAUNCHER.EXE, WSSETUP.EXE, REPORT32.EXE

Manual: LAUNCHER.EXE, WSSETUP.EXE, ACRORD32.EXE
